Neolithic Vessel

$425.00
This bowl was made in the Yangshao culture and is of the Ma-chia-yao type. This culture thrived in the northwestern part of China along and around the Yellow River between 3000 B.C. and 1700 B.C. The piece is in very good condition with no cracks to the body. Painted Yangshao pottery was fired at a high temperature (800-1050 Celsius) and has a thin, hard body with a smooth surface. As is typical with Yangshao wares, this jar is decorated with blackish-brown and reddish-brown burnished pigments. Because of its hardness, Yangshao pottery survives well and is easily cleaned to reveal the colorful decoration. Accordingly, it is the most collected of all neolithic Chinese pottery.
