Early Qing Dynasty Bench

This narrow-waisted elm wood bench features horse hoof legs and an all-original oxblood lacquer finish. Due to long use, much of the original lacquer has worn off, particularly around the feet. The piece can be bees-waxed for a more lustrous finish. Oxblood is one of the three traditional Chinese lacquer colors. Red and black lacquer are fully opaque. Oxblood lacquer is translucent and displays the beautiful wood grain below. Oxblood lacquer is made from actual ox blood dissolved into natural tree sap lacquer. In addition to its beautiful finish the bench features traditional mortise and tenon joinery. This is an exceptionally well preserved antique.
