Late Qing Dynasty Console Chest

This high console chest is from Shandong, China and was made from elmwood and oxblood lacquer. It dates to the late 19th century. Oxblood is one of the three traditional Chinese lacquers. Red and black lacquers are fully opaque. Oxblood lacquer, however, is translucent and displays the beautiful wood grain below. Oxblood lacquer is made from actual ox blood dissolved into natural tree sap lacquer. This piece features a beautifully aged patina and excellent mortise-and-tenon construction. The piece has two small drawers and two large doors opening to the main storage compartment. The squareness of the piece finds elegant contrast in its Tang Dynasty inspired horse hoof shaped legs.
