Late Qing Dynasty Side Chest with Two Drawers

$3,800.00
This handsome Chinese side chest is from Shanxi Province, China and made from elm wood. The piece features two drawers with intricately hard-carved drawer fronts depicting birds, deer, and foliage. The hidden storage compartment below is accessible only by removing the drawers. Drawer hardware is original and made from hand-forged iron. The piece features a round-posted frame with decoratively carved stretchers and is finished in an oxblood lacquer. Oxblood is one of the three traditional Chinese lacquers. Red and black lacquer are opaque. Oxblood lacquer, however, is translucent and displays the wood grain below. Oxblood lacquer is made from actual ox blood dissolved into natural tree sap lacquer. This piece features a beautifully aged patina and excellent mortise-and-tenon construction. The lacquer on this piece is unusually thick and crusty- it has absorbed soot and grime over many decades, producing a usually rich patina.
