Mid-Qing Dynasty Butterfly Chest with Three Drawers

$3,500.00
This Mid-Qing Dynasty butterfly chest is from Shandong, China and was made from elmwood and oxblood lacquer. It dates to the 19th century. Oxblood is one of the three traditional Chinese lacquers. Red and black lacquers are fully opaque. Oxblood lacquer, however, is translucent and displays the beautiful wood grain below. Oxblood lacquer is made from actual ox blood dissolved into a natural tree sap lacquer. This piece features a beautifully aged patina, excellent mortise-and-tenon construction, and three drawers for storage. Wear consistent with age and use.
