Pair of Qing Dynasty Chinese Official's Hat Armchairs

When chairs have non-protruding crest rails and arms that do not extend beyond the front post, they are known as southern official’s hat chairs or writing chairs. It is believed that this style of chair originated in Jiangsu province, hence the term “southern.” This short-backed pair feature floral carvings on the back splat and apron and date to the middle-Qing dynasty.
