Blue and White Lidded Jar

This newly-made jar features a hand painted bamboo pattern and protective brass detailing that outlines the rim of the lid and foot. Produced for use in homes and palaces, blue-and-white wares date back as far as the 9th century and are one of the most iconic arts of China. Stylistically pieces vary based on the era in which they were made; the Emperor and other cultural influences had much to do with the decoration and shape of each jar. Blue and White has, and continues to be reproduced throughout the world. Traditionally it refers to a blue pigment applied under the glaze of functional pottery and porcelain pieces, however the motif now goes beyond ceramics and can be found on decorative objects, wallpaper, textiles and fabrics.
