British Colonial Chechen Wood Armoire | c. 1900

This teal painted cabinet is a handsome example of an Anglo-Indian hybrid. The form and decoration of the piece is British, however the bright blue paint was a latter addition that reflects Indian cultural preferences. The initial, or under layer appears to be a darker black lacquer. This piece was likely built into the interior architecture of a room, as opposed to a stand-alone wardrobe. It is sturdy, has a strong visual presence and unique character—as evident in the finely detailed personal touches, like the “BMR” or “RMB” monogram carved into the crest on the scrollwork crown.
