Burmese Lacquerware Box

This lightweight box is made from woven rattan bonded together and sealed with red and black tree sap lacquer. It is very lightweight and break-resistant. We believe this piece is from central Burma but it could also be from the Shan States. Red lacquer, being much more expensive than black lacquer, was saved for the inside surface. The piece is likely the early 20th Century. Wear consistent with age and use.
