Burmese Rice Basket | c. 1950

This rice basket is from Burma and made from teak wood and rattan, c. 1950. The rattan fiber has been sealed with tree sap lacquer for additional strength and hardness. The rattan is sewn into the teak base. The piece originally feature a snugly fitted lid and had a jut cord securing the lid to the basket and the base. This type of vessel is known as "Lacquerware" and is rarely made today. Modern rice storage is usually plastic or metal.
