Dragon Form Decorative Carving

Chinese entrances often featured carved mythological creatures for protection. Foo Dogs, Dragons, and Qilings are most commonly found. This figure is a dragon as indicated by the scales on its body. Originally part of a pair it was inserted in the upper right corner of an entrance, just below the lintel. Dragons were believed to protect the inhabitants from evil spirits.
