Chinese Medicine Chest

$5,200.00
Chinese doctors used chests like this to store medicinal herbs, extracts and powdered minerals. Sometimes multiple chests were arranged in banks to offer the herbalist the greatest selection of ingredients for a medicinal cure or balm. The herbalist would consult with the patient at a desk and then mix the ingredients together and wrap them in paper. They were then taken home, boiled into a tea and drunk. This herb chest is of medium size, is protected by a black lacquer finish and still retains its original contents labels. It came from Shanxi, China and dates to the late 19th Century. It is made from Elm Wood. The brass handles appear to be original.
