Chinese Neolithic Terracotta Storage Jar

Hand constructed from coils of clay, the upper half of this vessel is painted with an intriguingly sophisticated bold geometric pattern. Below the two loop handles the lower half remains undecorated, as it would not have been visible once buried. Originating from the Yangshao culture, these funerary jars were placed in tombs and intended for use in the afterlife.
