Chinese Oxblood Lacquer Two-Drawer Coffer

Handsome, warm wood and a well-worn maroon colored patina accentuate this side chest's mature aura. The sizable drawers sit above a relief carved center panel—decorated with a flowering branch—that conceals a hidden compartment (or ”menhuchu”). The side panels are pierced carved with a sinuous archaistic motif that is most often seen in traditional jade carvings.
