Chinese Scholar’s Door Plaque

Carved from the wood of a tropical forest tree, more commonly referred to as 'yang na' wood in Thai, this sign reads "Jinshi". Jinshi is a type of degree from the Imperial Examinations, which represents success at the highest regular level. The characters (士進) literal translation is 'advanced scholar'. More specifically, those that attained this degree had passed the three-yearly court exam. Imperial examinations were formally established during the six century AD, by the Sui dynasty, and later abolished in 1905.
