Lisu Tribe Silver Collar Necklace | c. 1920

This finely crafted piece was made high in the mountains of southeast China, Thailand and Burma (modern day Myanmar) by an indigenous hill tribe. The Lisu people are know for their vibrant colored costumes and intricate accessories including headdresses and silver jewelry. Beautiful accouterments are created for specific events, rituals and religious ceremonies such as weddings. However, the most elaborate pieces are created for the lunar New Year celebration; considered absolutely paramount, it is the largest and grandest occasion with week-long festivities full of music and dancing. This stunning silver necklace features a metal collar with incised geometric decoration from which coiled solid spring-like extensions connect to hollow prism-form beads. The whole is mounted in a fitted glass and wood frame. Measurements reflect display case.
