Burmese Entry Arch

Carved Teak with polychrome, late 19th Century. The archway sat within a pair of columns and a heavy wooden lintel, probably within a temple. The wood has been painted multiple time –the current layer is a pale blue-gray paint with a lot of chalk content. It is likely of indigenous origin. The layer below is cinnabar red. The carving motif is traditional Burmese vines and foliage with a significant and highly unusual addition –Western angels with feathered wings. The piece can be added to entryway, fabricated into a mirror or mounted on a cleat and floated off the wall.
