French Blue and White Baluster Vase

The vase depicts two scenes, one of a man reading and tending to his steer in a field, and on the reverse two maidens or nymphs frolicking in the woods. The handles portray Melusine, shown her in winged, two-tailed mermaid form. It is likely these hand-painted scenes are meant to visually tell the story "Le Roman de Mélusine" by Jean d'Arras. This French folklore tail details Melusine's the water-nymph marriage to a mortal man, Raimondi and his betrayal.
