French Demilune Folding Game Table | c. 1850

This demilune folding game table is from France and dates to the 19th century, circa 1850. The table opens up to form a circular table to seat additional people, likely to play cards. The table is unusually simple, with the only explicit decoration being the original brass sabots found on its feet. Fortunately, none are missing. The legs taper gently and are somewhat slimmer than we might expect, which is due to the fact that the piece is made entirely from solid walnut. Walnut is very strong and hard and was the preferred wood for fine French furniture in the 18 and 19th centuries. The fact that it is made from superior wood (Walnut) may indicate an early 19th century date of manufacture or even earlier, but we cannot be certain. By the late 19th century and early 20th century, we often find such tables made from lesser woods or veneer over softwood. The piece lacks any finish but does not appear to be recently stripped. We recommend only waxing it.
