French Leather Armchair | c. 1940

This Classic French Art Deco armchair is made from leather and dates to the 1940's. The shape of the chair is elegant with a simple and curvaceous back and rolled arms that are not overly bulbous (as many French Deco chairs appear). The chair exudes quiet comfort and style. The patina of the leather is complex with rich color variation, old stains are evenly present along with scratches, tears and areas of fading. This is expected. Some areas (like the top of the back) have an interesting crackle pattern. The nailheads on the back appear to be original. The seat cushion is somewhat complicated; the piece of leather on the top is a new piece that was skillfully antiqued to match the arms. That new piece of leather looks to have been applied to an old replacement cushion that was covered in velvet. The current leather surface looks to be added to a cushion that was itself a replacement. Leather seat cushions receive the most wear and are often replaced by fabric (usually velvet) so we do not find this surprising. As the old velvet cushion was still in good condition (except for the top) it was retained and recovered with leather. This is the kind of "loving repair" that speaks well to the quality and value of the piece --it was restored but very tastefully.
