Hand-Carved Mbole Tribal Ceremonial Mask

This hand-carved tribal ceremonial mask is from the Mbole Tribe from the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The mask features original patina and pigments and is in good condition. This mask was used in either the circumcision rituals or likomela (the lower level rites of the Lilwa association). In the likomela ceremonies young men and some young women, guided by a ritual expert, pass through a series of trials and learn basic social and ethical concepts. It seems quite unlikely that such a mask was intended to be worn over the face, for it is quite flat on the back and there are no holes for eyes. Dimensions reflect the mask only. Wear consistent with age and use.
