Mbole Currency Ring

$1,400.00
This currency ring is from the Mbole, an ethnic group of about 150,000 people living in the Orientale Province, southwest of Kisangani in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. This piece features a rich patina and was made from copper; wear and tear according to age and use. Mbole currency, often referred to as 'the perfect form,' was worn around the ankle as a display of status by both women and men of the Mbole tribe. Forged from copper, mboles were exchanged during marriage ceremonies. Copper was worked in Africa five-hundred years before the use of iron. This ancient material is associated with water and fertility. Lilwa society teaches both morality and religion. Women and elders, both living and dead, are to be respected. Theft, adultery and lying are prohibited. A person who breaks the law is subject to public reprimand and may suffer further punishment. In the most severe cases the wrong-doer is hung and buried in an unmarked grave. Dimensions listed are for the currency ring itself, not including the base.
