Chiang Mai Lacquerware Bowl

$350.00
Thailand and Burma are both famous for sturdy and beautiful vessels, platters, and boxes made from lacquered wood and bamboo. Sap from the Laq tree was mixed with iron filings to produce black lacquer and with cinnabar powder to produce red lacquer. Tree lacquer acted as both a glue and a protective surface and made the vessels lightweight and break-resistant. This bowl has many layers of lacquer, completely hiding the woven rattan below. The upper segment was etched with a decorative pattern and filled in with orange-tinted lacquer. The piece dates to the early 1900s and came from Chiang Mai Province, Thailand.
