French Demi-lune Folding Game Table | c. 1850

This demi-lune folding game table is from France and dates to the 19th Century. The table opens up to form a circular table to seat additional people, probably for playing cards. The table is unusually simple, with the only explicit decoration being the original brass sabots found on its feet. Fortunately, none are missing. The legs taper gently and are somewhat slimmer than we might expect and this is due to the fact that the piece is made entirely from solid Walnut Wood. Walnut is very strong and hard and the was preferred wood for fine French Furniture in the 18 and 19th centuries. So the table is very simple but made very from fine hardwood. The fact that it is made from superior wood (Walnut) may indicate an early 19th Century date of manufacture or even earlier. We cannot be certain. By the late 19th Century or early 20th, we often find such tables made from lesser woods or veneer over softwood. The piece lacks any finish but does not appear to be recently stripped. We recommend only waxing it.
