Rosewood Bench

This modern bench is made from a 19th Century Burmese railroad tie. The rail line was built by the British to access a teak forest. As the line was extended, rosewood trees (mixed in with the teak) were selected for the sleepers (ties) the wood is so hard and dense that no creosote was needed to protect them from moisture. They just cut the wood and put it in the ground, where it remained for 110 years. The railroad was never used after the initial logging and the valuable wood ties were forgotten until rediscovered in 2005. The wood has been cleaned, polished, and sealed with lacquer before being fitted with solid cedar legs.
