Marble Carving of a Sitting Cherub

Handsome statue of a sitting cherub from France made from marble c. 1900's. Cherubs were one of the unearthly beings who directly attend to God according to Abrahamic religions. The numerous depictions of cherubim assign to them many different roles; their original duty having been the protection of the Garden of Eden. Often portrayed with wings as an angelic being described in biblical tradition as attendants for God. They are represented in ancient Middle Eastern art as a lion or bull with eagles' wings and a human face, and regarded in traditional Christian angelology as an angel of the second highest order of the ninefold celestial hierarchy. Wear consistent with age and use.
