Monumental African Carving of a Man | c. 1900

This hand-carved sculpture stands over 6 feet tall. Splashes of black and yellow pigment coat the rudimentary sculpted features, both arms fully rotate and a swath of metal adorns the upper left thigh. Traditionally Sukuma people were agriculturists that farmed crops and tended to cattle; this figure could have been used in a variety of tribal ceremonies, or was used to guard crops in a ‘scarecrow’ type fashion. It is a dramatic piece that would be an impressive addition to any African art collection, or spacious room.
