Pair of Chinese High-Waisted Cabinets

The slightly rounded, overhanging tops—called a cabinet’s cap—have inset lightwood panels, which compliment the handsome black-brown lacquer finish. Single drawers are fitted inside the high waist of each, below which two doors with circular metal lock plates and raindrop pulls conceal a shelved storage compartment. Given their compact rectangular shape and size, they also make wonderful side chests or nightstands. Constructed with some pieces of reclaimed wood (salvaged from incomplete or damaged antiques), these pieces were built using traditional mortise and tenon joinery. There are no nails to fasten, secure or attach the parts and joints, just like the classic furniture it is modeled after.
