This tall cedar pillar was once found in the loggia of a madrassa or a prosperous home. In 2005, an earthquake destroyed many of these structures and their salvageable wooden parts were sold off. The Swat Valley was once an important part of the ancient Silk Road and the architecture of its buildings often blends Asian, European, and Islamic motifs. The delicate flowers found in the capital are an expression of “the wood becoming a tree again”. The carver honored the taking of the tree for human use and memorialized it. The piece dates to the late 19th Century.
