Southeast Asian Figural Carvings

These two figures are Thai “Greeting Angels” which would have been found at the entrance to a temple. The natural erosion from centuries of exposure to the elements has left them exquisitely worn; sharp jagged edges dissolve into soft rounded curves accentuated by angular and layered carving. Slight traces of facial features—which were once finely detailed—are still visible, along with remnants of white and red lacquer decoration. They have been mounted on contemporary wooden stands.
