Set of 4 Burmese Teaching Panels

This set of 4 temple teaching panels was made in Rangoon, Burma from softwood and colored with mineral paints. Teaching panels depict stories from the life of Buddha as well as illustrations of myths and moral teachings. Teaching panels were sometimes found in temples as a supplement to more formal altar sculptures, such as Buddha images. The purpose of the panels was educational and not to be an object of worship. These 4 panels came from a larger series and recounts the second to last life of the Buddha. The carving dates to the 1930's or 1940's. The surface frames are of recent origin. The panels may be mounted in a grid (as shown) or as a long strip.
