Southeast Asian Wooden Papier Mâché Molds of Dolls

These egg shaped casts are used to create children’s toys; the forms are covered in layers of paper mache and allowed to dry. Once hardened, the shell is removed, resealed and decorated in bright colors with painted features. This particular mold makes ovular ‘baby’ dolls whose faint features are visible in the raised circular face and outline of a nose.
