Japanese Glass Fishing Floats | c. 1920

$390.00
These hollow glass globes, though handsome, served a utilitarian purpose; fisherman would string them together in large groups to buoy their nets and droplines. Replacing their wood and cork predecessors, these spheres were made from recycled sake bottles and would bob along the surface of the North Pacific holding up miles and miles of fishnets. Authentic floats show signs of a seasoned life at sea: faint netting patterns are etched into their surfaces from years of rubbing, and distinctive wear patterns from sun and saltwater corrosion adorn their surfaces. Only 3 available.
