The Yao tribe live in Yunnan Province, China and in the nearby countries of Southeast Asia. The Yao follows an ancient form of Taoism which requires many rituals to be followed. In order to communicate with the gods. Paintings like this one depict gods and the heavenly realm and were assembled in sets to create a temporary shrine. This painting was made in the 19th Century from guache on rice paper. It was part of a set of 26 kept rolled up most of the time.
